Beschreibung
June, there were weeks of battles against mildew and the raging elements, hundreds of tacks that didn’t go through, retreats to windward, refuges and returns to sea... until the entry into the Pacific on 25th June. Here, everything changed, with days of gentle, temperate breezes. The vines healed their wounds, the crew recharged their batteries and the wounds were quickly forgotten.
By the end of August, the ripening process was running perfectly smoothly, and we were tasting berries selected from the vines on the Lafite plateau. They were full of flavour and life, the result of a perfect summer after all those storms. The harvest began on 23rd September with our best Merlot grapes from Pointon and Gravette, and we were now full steam ahead at all costs, dodging the raindrops. Our best Cabernet grapes were picked at the beginning of October, and we had everything in on the 7th. With short vinfications, gentle extractions and selected pressings, Olivier’s team now navigates in the cellar with elegance and precision.
What a milestone !

Such composure, how is it possible? Lafite 2024 completely shattered my expectations of the vintage. With a calm, detached poise, it pairs seamlessly with the understated character of the vintage, it’s the kind of serenity that only comes from true harmony between man and nature. No flamboyant fruit, no noisy spice, just a few brushstrokes of ink and traces of graphite, sketching a scene of cool restraint and lofty clarity. On the palate, it enters soft and seamless, like silk slipping across the tongue. Elusive at first, yet it lands in the throat with the quiet force of a Tai Chi push-silent, but with lingering aftershocks. Tasting it calls to mind a line of poetry: “The mountain takes shape in the breath between presence and absence”. This wine doesn’t rely on vividness or show; its brilliance lies in its subtlety.

A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Lafite Rothschild offers up aromas of minty blackcurrants, violets, incense, loamy soil and cigar box, followed by a medium-bodied, pillowy and open-knit palate built around tangy acids and powdery tannins, concluding with a discreetly herbal finish. Harvest began on September 24 and concluded on October 4, delivering a Lafite in something of a throwback style, nodding to the wines made here in the 1970s.

Rich texture, this stands head and shoulders above many in the vintage, with graphite, crayon, cassis bud rather than exuberant black fruits, this is precise, savoury, delineated, floral, gunsmoke, juicy, captures the effortless elegance that Lafite does so so well, and it totally delivers. Harvest 23 September to 7 October, 32hl/h yield, above the Pauillac average, 16% press wine included in the blend. Director Eric Kohler's 33rd year in Pauillac. I am giving a slightly earlier begin drinking date, but I am certain this will age exceptionally well as Lafite always does. Slightly earlier starting date for drinking than usual, eight years following harvest.

Deep dark ruby, deep core, violet reflections. Fine herbal savouriness, red berryish touch, a hint of cassis, but also red cherries. A touch of oak. On the palate taut, red berryish and fresh, silky tannins, lively acidity, nuances of currant, mineral, delicate and light-footed, a refined food wine with good ageing potential.

Quite plump and plush for the vintage. Like its stablemate Duhart this is very spherical in its shape in the mouth, with gloriously refined cashmere tannins encircling the fresh, bright, crisp and crunchy dark berries and the black cherries – just à point – that form the dense and compact core around which the wine is structured vertically. Horizontally, the wine is again highly structured by a very well-defined central spine around which the graphite seems to gather with the tannins in this dimension stretching out the fruit over the palate. Very classical, very pure and precise, very focussed and always tender, soft and gently seductive. Almost opulent, but never quite, the austerity of the vintage reining it back and rendering this a little more ethereal and also a little more intellectual in the process. 94-96+.
