Beschreibung
Its 39-hectare vineyard stands out for the remarkable consistency of its boundaries, which have remained unchanged for over 150 years. This unique heritage is made up of 45 plots, forming a true living mosaic. The distinctive character of this exceptional terroir—combining fine clay soils with gravelly ones—has given rise to an original grape composition, with Cabernet Franc as the dominant variety since 1911.
Cheval Blanc was one of the first estates in Bordeaux to embrace agroforestry. Recognizing the need to strengthen the balance of this fragile yet extraordinary ecosystem to ensure it can be passed on to future generations, the team—led by Pierre-Olivier Clouet—chose to rethink their practices and reintroduce trees throughout the vineyard. Their aim: to promote biodiversity and restore fertility to the soil.
The 2024 Vintage
"Rain, rain and yet more rain: this is how the 2024 vintage will be remembered. Difficult climatic conditions where the hardiness of our Cabernets and the quality of our terroirs made their mark."
In 2024, the proportion of harvested grapes which didn’t make it past the selection process for both the first and second wines was abnormally high. Manual selection and densimetric baths (used to separate heterogenous grapes from the bunches), saignées and bulk wine accounted for over a third of the total harvest. This drastic reduction enabled Cheval Blanc's team to stick to their practice of vinifying plot by plot and integrating nearly all the plots into the final blend.
In conclusion, a demanding vintage which gave us confidence in our technical decisions in the short and long term as we were able to bottle the best Cheval Blanc possible. The 2024 vintage should also express lots of freshness and balance just like its older brother from 2004 which was born in very difficult conditions and which, 20 years on, is revealing its full potential.

The 2024 Cheval Blanc was picked from September 18 until October 3 and aged entirely in new oak with a little dabbling in concrete tanks and amphorae. The purity on the nose is the first facet that you notice with perfumed black cherry, blackcurrant, wild strawberry and touches of potpourri and crushed stone. There is certainly some mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly brittle tannins. Very well balanced, this is clearly a Cheval Blanc built in a more elegant, sapid, linear style with a residual pepperiness that lingers in the mouth. It will need just 2 or 3 years in bottle and should drink well for 20 to 25 years. The 2024 is charming and refined.

(St Emilion; 46% Merlot; 48% Cabernet Franc; 6% Cabernet Sauvignon; a vineyard yield of 39 hl/ha, reduced to 28 hl/ha in the tanks after strict densimetric sorting; tasted at the property with Pierre Olivier Clouet). “A vintage from the 1970s vinified with 21st century techniques”, says Pierre Olivier Clouet – as ever, he’s right! Gorgeous aromatically. Lifted, plump, plush, succulent, very classical in a way – cedar, graphite, pencil-shavings, dark berry and stone fruits. Black cherry, bramble and blackberry, a little cassis and blueberry, above all with just a little aeration in the mouth. Much more ample than Petit Cheval and with a gorgeous natural sweetness. Walnut, almost frangipane and a little gentle toasted note. Very gathered on the finish. Very fresh, above all with a gently lift towards the fantail that forms the finish and releases the sapidity. Vivid but also classical and stylish in its elegance – but not a manufactured elegance. Poised, coiled and very promising.

The 2024 Cheval Blanc is a blend taken from 37 of the 45 parcels on the property. Dried flowers, mocha, rose petal and blood orange open nicely in the bouquet, leading to an understated mid-palate and a subtly persistent finish. Understated and nuanced, the 2024 offers lovely forward fruit in a soft, accessible style with no hard edges or awkward contours. All the elements are nicely put together, and yet there is no denying the fact that the 2024 is very light. Élevage will be everything here.

Black raspberries, plums, flowers, espresso, citrus, and hints of chocolate fill the perfume. On the palate, the wine is fresh, long, clean, and intense. It exhibits lift and vibrancy, along with intensity and purity. This is a classic, firm, and fresh vintage for Cheval Blanc that is long, vibrant, and provides tension, length, and purity from beginning to end. The key to this year's vintage was the willingness to make strict selections, as well as allowing grapes from 37 parcels into the blend, ensuring a true representation of the vineyard. As you can see, this is one of the stars of the vintage. The wine is made from 48% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12.8% ABV, 3.61 pH. The harvest began September 18 for the Merlot, finishing their Cabernet Franc on October 3. Drink from 2030-2055.

The 2024 vintage of Château Cheval Blanc is marked by exceptional purity of Cabernet Franc and an especially vivid sense of dimension. Its success is not only the result of precise vineyard work and tireless dedication throughout the year, but also of the critical role played by Tri densimétrique. This year, the estate decisively downgraded 34% of the crop, and only 54% made it into the grand vin, with an average yield of just 28hl/ha. This uncompromising, cost-ignoring selection reveals the enduring confidence and quiet authority of Cheval Blanc. With 48% Cabernet Franc in the blend, the wine draws its structure with effortless clarity and poise, each line infused with quiet maturity. The tannin is refined and lingering, like the last glow of sunlight before dusk, casting its unique radiance even in a cool vintage.

A blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 48% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Château Cheval Blanc is one of the stars of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of minty berries and plums mingled with violets, cigar wrapper and rose petals, it's medium-bodied, suave and complete, with a cool, layered core of fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and a long, aromatic finish. Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team conducted an aggressive green harvest and also, exceptionally, used densimetric sorting to mitigate heterogenous maturity between and within bunches (a consequence of a protracted flowering), accepting losses to rot in pursuit of full maturity. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare at harvest, but some 34% of that was eliminated between sorting and press wine (which is never retained at Cheval Blanc). Of what fermented, however, 70% ended up in the grand vin.

Lilac, peony flowers, same family of aromatics as the Petit Cheval, same feeling of finesse and precision, but here everything has been taken up a notch, more density, more slate and pumice stone texture. Expect subtle complexity, a wine that steals up on you, impresses in its precision and clarity. July and August just 20mm of rain each month, well below 30 year average, 140mm rain in September, highest since 2006, harvest September 18 to October 3, 3.62ph (3.9ph in 2022), 37 plots out of the 56 in the vineyard are in here. 100% new oak for ageing. Looking forward to seeing after ageing, it has all the elements and bones in place for a totally delicious Cheval.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening. Delicate nougat, a hint of cassis and savouriness, with ripe cherry in the background, fine wood nuances, multi-faceted, inviting bouquet. Taut, medium body, ripe tannins, fresh and elegant, still somewhat closed, mineral, good persistence, this wine definitely needs time to integrate the tannins, sure development and certain ageing potential.

48% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon
