James Suckling 95-96: This is a beautifully balanced red with blackberries, some plums and chocolate and hazelnut. Full and tight with polished and refined tannins. So very fine-textured finish. Savory. Persistent. 75 per cent merlot, the rest cabernet franc. New wine, overseen by Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux Château Certan. jamessuckling.com 04.2019 // Lisa Perrotti-Brown 92-94: The 2018 Guillot Clauzel is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc with a pH of 3.65 and 14.4% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with expressive red and black berry preserves, Black Forest cake and garrigue with hints of tobacco, fragrant soil, cloves and star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is beautifully structured with ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness lifting the dense, earthy layers to a long, refreshing finish. Nicely done! Once part of Château Beauregard, this is a tiny, family-owned plot in the heart of Pomerol consisting of 1.7 hectares of clay and gravel. It has been something of an underperformer over the last couple of decades. However, Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux Château Certain have just taken over management here—meaning this is certainly a property to watch. “We have instilled precision here—everything we do at Vieux Château Certan has begun here. The terroir is very interesting, gravelly, on a slope, facing south. It has a lot of potential.” robertparker.com 04.2019
